Joomla! Design, Development and Support
What is Joomla?
Joomla! is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla the most popular Web site software available. Best of all, Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone.
Joomla! came into being as the result of the fork of the open source Mambo CMS by the development team on August 17, 2005. On September 1, 2005 the new name, "Joomla!", was announced, which is the English spelling of the Arabic word jumla meaning "all together" or "as a whole". By July 2008, the official Joomla! forum had more than 300,000 discussions and over 1.3 million posts from more than 255,000 registered members in 40 languages. And the numbers continue to rise dramatically.
West of East, Inc. has been actively involved in the community since the project's inception, making the move with the development team from Mambo to Joomla! and we continue to contribute and support users in the community. In fact, some of our contributions are in use on Joomla! powered sites all over the world!
What is a CMS?
The basic premise of a CMS is that a non-technical site owners want to keep their website up-to-date without having to call on a web developer to make minor changes every time. While there are some things that can only be done by a web developer, simple tasks such as changing the wording of a paragraph, or updating content should be accessible to the owner without having to go through a developer or webmaster. Joomla separates the technical tasks from the common by providing tools that help site owners and users manage and organize the content of their website. It also provides additional tools which help to add more functionality to a site by installing ready-made components, for example to add a guestbook, forum, events calendar, etc. - many of which are free of licensing charges and contributed to the community.
